General Notes and Anecdotes

Sisters Jane and Mary Woodward married brothers Nathaniel and John Newlin.

Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

FOLLOWUP

Jane may have married Nathaniel Newlin on the same day her sister married his brother. [book-genealogy-of-the-woodward-family-1879]

The History of Delaware County, Pennsylvania relates an amusing anecdote about how Esther's parents didn't want her to marry Nathaniel --- not because they didn't like him, but because he lived in the back country where bears were a real problem.

Nathaniel and Jane's son Nathaniel may have married Esther Metcalf in 1735. Nathaniel and Esther had a daughter Tabitha who married John Mendenhall. [book-mendenhalls-a-genealogy-1969]

Nathaniel and Esther may have had a son, Nathaniel Newlin IV. This son was a member of the State Senate and of the convention which framed the U.S. Constitution in 1790. There are stories that he was offered, and refused, a seat in Congress by the dominant party; not just once, but several times.

Jane probably died in 1737.
