General Notes and Anecdotes

In 1830, bothers William, Robert, James, Samuel, David, Andrew, and Joseph Spear were all living in separate households in Kirkwood Township, Ohio. The record also suggests that Robert and William were next-door neighbors, as were James, David, and Andrew. [census-us-1830-ps-oh-belmont-kirkwood]

Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

FOLLOWUP

Joseph may have been born 12 Jan 1809 in Ohio, and died 1844 in Batesville, Guernsey County, Ohio. [research-a-spear-family-history]

The 1830 U.S. Census identifies the household as containing Joseph and one female under 20, possibly his wife, Sarah. [census-us-1830-ps-oh-belmont-kirkwood]

A registry entry for Joseph Spear and Sarah Hinton show that they were issued a marriage license on 1 Jun 1830 in Belmont County, Ohio, but the entry does not record the marriage return. The entry shows empty space where the return should be and it doesn't appear the ink simply faded, so why is the entry missing? Some records, such as son Daniel's death certificate, imply a marriage by naming Joseph and Sarah as parents. Other (text-only) indices record the fact of marriage. [death-daniel-spear-1915, marriage-spear-hinton-1830]

Note that the official census day in 1830, was 1 Jun, the same date as Joseph and Mary's marriage license and possibly their marriage, though the marriage wasn't recorded with the license as it normally should have been.

Joseph and Sarah's first two children may have been Mary Ann Spear (b. 15 Feb 1831 in Belmont County, Ohio) and Keziah Spear (b. 27 Jan 1833 in Bedford, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, d. 16 Apr 1868 in York Township, Athens County, Ohio. Mary may have married (31 Dec 1857 in Noble County, Ohio) James Webber, Jr., while Keziah may have married (2 Mar 1854 in Noble County, Ohio) Jacob Bowersock. [research-a-spear-family-history]

There is a 20-year old Mary Spear living in the home of Richard _____, and living next door to Robert and Margaret Spear (presumably her uncle and aunt) on 25 Aug 1850. However, that Mary is identified as having been born in Virginia, not Ohio.
