General Notes and Anecdotes

When Harry first moved to California from Minnesota, he found work as a milkman, but the nature of the work hurt his back. [interview-{private}-2020]

Following this, he and Selma worked for his brother Clifford in his bakery for a while then started their own bakery, located within a grocery store. His products included some of Clifford's. [interview-{private}-2020]

When Harry and Selma first moved from Los Angeles to Lancaster, California, they owned a chicken farm. [interview-loretta-spear-undated, interview-{private}-2020]

They worked up to a business of 3000 birds. Unfortunately, at some point the birds caught a virulent disease, and over the course of a week, they lost their entire flock. [interview-{private}-2020]

They subsequently moved to Hemet where they opened a sandwich and donut shop. [interview-{private}-2020]

Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Birth Date: This database uses 25 Nov 1908. An interview with Harry's niece gives his birth year as 1907. [interview-loretta-spear-2006]

FOLLOWUP

Harry may have left school early (4th grade) to work on his family's farm. [interview-{private}-2020]

Harry owned a gas station (Royal 76) in Lancaster, CA, on the corner of Avenue J and 15 St. West. (from an interview with Loretta Spear, but I can't find a record of it)

According to one source, Harry and Selma owned a donut shop in Los Angeles. Another indicates they owned a bakery in L.A. (which implies more than a donut shop) and a sandwich and donut shop in Hemet. For this tree it is assumed the first source was conflating business and location. [interview-loretta-spear-undated, interview-{private}-2020]

He may have lived in Hemet from at least 1993.

Harry may have died at 94, giving a death date of about 2002. [interview-{private}-2020]

Alternatively, he may have died 12 Oct 2005 in Hemet, California. [research-social-security-death-index]
