Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

FOLLOWUP

Elizabeth is the subject of the historical novel The Winthrop Woman by Anya Seton, published in 1958. While this is reputed to be a well-researched and apparently well-liked book, it is ultimately a work of fiction and not suitable as a source in this genealogy. On 1 Sep 2021 I checked reviews on Amazon.com (4.5/5, 781 votes), Goodreads.com (4.1/5, 5454 votes).

Stories abound about the adultery of Elizabeth, and these, if true, may be at least partly responsible for Robert's breakdown. There is also controversy about whether or not Robert and Elizabeth were truly divorced, thus leaving Elizabeth free to marry William.

Henry and Elizabeth (Fownes) Winthrop had one child, Martha Johnson (born 9 May 1630). Martha married Thomas Lyon of Stamford, Conn. [book-palmer-families-in-america-1966]

Robert and Elizabeth (Fownes) Feake had five children: Elizabeth (born abt. 1633), Hannah (born abt. 1636), John (born abt. 1838/9), Robert (baptized 17 Jul 1642), and Sarah (baptized 14 Apr 1647). The baptisms took place in the Dutch Churcy, New York City. Elizabeth married (1659) Capt. John Underhill. Hannah married (7 May 1656) John Browne. John married (15 Sep 1678) Elizabeth Prior.
