On 20 Feb 1860, Alvah and Lydia, along with their children Thomas, Anna, and Susan, were granted a certificate to West Union, MM (Indiana). Lydia's probable entry in the 1860 census does not have a readable name; the name looks more like a doodle. However, she (the entry is identified as female) is in the customary line for the spouse of the head-of-household, and is the right age, and was born in Ohio. It seems reasonable to interpret this entry as Lydia, but it is not used as evidence for this entry. [census-us-1860-ps-in-morgan-gregg-42]
Lydia's death date is given as 16 Jul 1851 in The Encyclopedia of Amercan Quaker Genealogy, Vol. 5, p. 396, in the 1848 entry for Alvah and his family. Given the birth dates of several children after 1851, as well as the granting of a certificate to West Union MM (The Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol. 5, p. 398) for Alva, his wife Lydia, and their children, that date is absurd. Is the Encyclopedia wrong? If not, it could be a typo for 1861, although given that daughter Luella was born about 1870 according to the 1880 U.S. Census (not saved), a death date of 1871 would be more appropriate. This would also mean that Alvah remarried within about three years -- more reasonable than thirteen years for a farmer with several young children. [book-american-quaker-genealogy-v5-1946]
