Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)
FOLLOWUP
John's surname is not clear. It is Marks in the 1892 New York Census, but this is after Michael married Lottie. Since John was born about 5 years before the marriage, his father was likely Lottie's first husband, with the surname Schmetgall.
However, a source notes he was named John Barrand. [research-conversation-with-{private}-2011]
John's birth date is before the marriage date of Mikel and Lottie Marks, his parents in 1892. He is likely the son of Lottie and her first husband. [census-us-newyork-1892-kings-17-1-2]
There was a John Marks, b. abt 1878 in Germany, enlisted in the U.S. Army on 3 Oct 1911. He may have been honorably discharged 2 Oct 1914.
