James may be listed in the 1860 US Federal Census, Seneca Township, Noble County, Ohio, page 184, line 1. He is the right age for a son of William Shafer, and is listed with his wife Sarah E. Shafer and an infant daughter, Margaret. Another elderly individual is also listed as Elizabeth Scofield[?], who may be his mother-in-law, or a grandparent.
