General Notes and Anecdotes

in 1936, Marguerite (the "fleetest feminine sprinter in the West") won the women's 100-meter race in Olympic tryouts at the Coliseum in Los Angeles. Observing the trials were screen actor Melvyn Douglas and his wife, Helen Gahagan, a Broadway and screen actress, and opera star (and from the late 1930s, a politician). When it was revealed there were no funds to send the competing athletes to the final trials in Providence, Rhode Island, the couple decided to fund Marguerite's trip. [periodical-caswell-leaves-for-eastern-trials-1936]

Marguerite married Earle Meadows some six months before telling anyone, even Marguerite's father, Clyde Caswell. According to the 14 Dec 1937 edition of the Los Angeles Times, "... when the [USC] Trojans and Stanford tangled for high-point honors in the conference meet at the Coliseum last May 29, Meadows and Miss Caswell agreed that if he suceeded in breaking the world's pole-vault record of 14ft. 8-1/2in. they'd celebrate by getting married./He did---and they did."
