FOLLOWUP

Fred sometimes husked black walnuts in his corn sheller (a device with toothed wheels, used to remove corn kernels from the cob, but also often used for hulling black walnuts). This left him with a temporary odor of walnut hulls, a smell appreciated by his niece, Cora. (Husking removes the fleshy hull, leaving the shell and nut suitable for storage. These hulls have an smell that some consider pleasantly pungent or spicy.) [This information is in the research notes, because it is not known if this refers to Fred Schalk or Fred Stilwell, both of whom were great-uncles to Cora.] [interview-cora-mcquisten-2007]
