General Notes and Anecdotes

The name that Mary Anna used evolved over her lifetime, at least on the surviving records. In her childhood she generally went by Mary Anna. From the mid-1890s (when she was around 30) she started using just Anna. Finally, sometime between 1910 and 1920 (when she was around 50) she began to use Marianna, which she used through the rest of her life. That these names applied to the same woman was confirmed by her grandson and captioned photographs. [media-mary-anna-hocket-wilson-photos]

Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Birth Date: This database uses 22 Oct 1866. The 1910 U.S. Census gives an age of (42), which, when applied to the offical census date of 15 Apr 1910, gives a birth date range from 16 Apr 1867 to 15 Apr 1868. [census-us-1910-ps-sd-lyman-57-5b]

Birth Date: This database uses 22 Oct 1866. The 1920 U.S. Census gives an age of (52), which, when applied to the offical census date of 1 Jan 1920, gives a birth date range from 2 Jan 1867 to 1 Jan 1868. [census-us-1920-ps-sd-jones-101-2a]

SPELLING

Given Name: This database uses Mary Anna. In the 1910 U.S. Census her middle initial is unclear, but the name appears to be Anna N. During this period of her life she was using Anna as a first name, so it seems resaonble she may have swapped names, using Mary as a middle name. Howevever, the "new" middle initial doesn't appear to be an 'M'. [census-us-1910-ps-sd-lyman-57-5b]

FOLLOWUP

When did she leave the Friends? Was it due to her marrying A.T. Wilson? I don't think he was a member, even though they were married in "Friends Church" per their marriage certificate. This may be documented in the Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy.
