General Notes and Anecdotes

In 1880, Cyrus Anderson and James Greason arrived in Rawlins County and established The Republican Citizen newspaper, acting as editors and publishers. The paper was in its 37th year, and using the name Citizen-Patriot, when his obituary was printed in it. [obituary-cyrus-anderson-1917]

However, he was more interested in politics, and ended his connection to the paper to run for the office of County Clerk in 1882, which he won. He spent six years in the office before moving from Atwood to Blakeman in 1886, where he waged a political battle to move the county seat to Blakeman. In 1889 he was appointed as Register of the United States Land Office of Oberlin during the administration of president Benjamin Harrison, but lost it in 1892 with the election of Grover Cleveland, gaining it back in 1898 under the administration of William McKinley, with the office now in Colby. [obituary-cyrus-anderson-1917]

Belle's sister, Wilma, was staying with Cyrus and Belle Anderson by at least 1900 and probably through Wilma's wedding in 1906. [census-us-1900-ps-ks-thomas-180-3a, periodical-married-higley-spear-1906]

When his four-year tarm expired in 1902, Cyrus was appointed to the Kansas State Board of Railroad Commissioners. Following this appointment he left the political world and retired to his farm. [obituary-cyrus-anderson-1917]

Cyrus was in failing health for the last year or so of his life, and had to move from his farm to live in the city. [obituary-cyrus-anderson-1917]

Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Birth Date: This database uses 7 Dec 1851. The 1900 U.S. Census gives an explicit birth date (Dec/1852) and an age (47). When applied to the official census date of 1 Jun 1900, the age gives a birth date range of 2 Jun 1852 to 1 Jun 1853, so the record is internally consistent. [census-us-1900-ps-ks-thomas-180-3a]

Marriage Date: This database uses 10 June 1891. The 1900 U.S. Census gives the number of years (9) of marriage, which, when applied to the official census date of 1 Jun 1900, gives a marriage date range from 2 June 1890 to 1 June 1891. [census-us-1900-ps-ks-thomas-180-3a]

Marriage Date: This database uses 10 June 1891. The obituary for Cryus Anderson gives a date of 10 Jul 1891. [obituary-cyrus-anderson-1917]

Occupation (1900): This database uses Register of the United States Land Office. The 1900 U.S. Census says he was a receiver. This is a different job from register, and his four-year term as register began in 1898. It isn't clear what the distinction is. [census-us-1900-ps-ks-thomas-180-3a]

FOLLOWUP

Cyrus' middle name may have been Donald. [research-a-spear-family-history]

David, Elizabeth, and Cyrus probably moved from Indiana to Kansas Territory sometime between 1852 and 1858.

In 1874, Cyrus may have been elected as a delegate to the Republican State Convention.

A photograph in the Spear Archive (#TBDphotoID_notYetCataloged) shows Cyrus and Amanda, with children Donald and Harold, from about 1899 or 1900. It also shows Wilma Anderson, who looks too old to have been born after 1891. Since Cyrus was 38 when he married Belle, Wilma may have been a child from an earlier marriage. There is an 1880 U.S. Census record for a Cyrus Anderson in Indiana with wife Kate and child Bertha (b. about 1879), but this record would be too early for Wilma. Need to order a birth certificate.

Cyrus probably died in Atwood, Rawlins County, Kansas. [research-a-spear-family-history]
