General Notes and Anecdotes

Mattie filed for divorce from Willis before 27 May 1915. According to her petition, he left her 16 Mar 1913 after 15 years of a "systematic campaign of fault finding and abuse" and failed to support her after that. Only Viola was still at home at the time, and Martha sought custody. [periodical-campaign-of-abuses-1915]

Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

FOLLOWUP

Willis' parents were both from Ohio. [census-us-1900-ps-ks-rawlins-130-8a]

He may have been born 28 Oct 1859. (From the California, Death Index, 1940-1997 text-only database on Ancestry.com.)

Willis Dole and Martha Spear may have married 1 May 1889 in Atwood, Rawlins County, Kansas. [research-a-spear-family-history]

There exist multiple voter registration records for Willis P. Dole in Santa Cruz County between 1920 and 1938 (and Los Angeles County in 1924). He was a registered republican and identiifed as a fireman, laborer, or gardener, depending on the year. All have the same residence address from 1926, before that a couple of different addresses (one on the same street) are represented.

The 1930 U.S. Census notes that Willis Dole was divorced. Since this simply applies to a divirce prior to 1930, it may or may not refer to his marriage to Martha; that it may refer to another wife must be taken into account, so this is not yet a source. [census-us-1930-ps-ca-santacruz-9-9b]

Willis probably died 5 Jun 1940 in Santa Cruz, California, and was buried in the I.O.O.F Cementery [an alternate name for the Santa Cruz Memorial Cemetery] in Santa Cruz, California. [research-a-spear-family-history]
