FOLLOWUP

Jack's mother was Mrs. Coreva (Rogers) Wilkins of Elmira, his (late) father was Harry A. Wilkins, and his maternal grandmother was Mrs. Clara A. Fritsch of Ithaca. [obituary-jack-wilkins-1972]

Jack and Sylva's descendents include {private} [obituary-jack-wilkins-1972 (names of children and grandchildren alive in 1972 only), research-a-spear-family-history]

Jack's middle name may have been Arthur, and he may have been born in 1924. [research-a-spear-family-history]

Jack may have been drafted in July 1945. (From the 12 Jul 1945 Star-Gazette of Elmira, New York, page 13, col. 7, in the story "Board 504 Calls Men For July 20.")

Jack may have enjoyed piloting gliders. A Jack A. Wilkins of Elmira was co-owner of a two-seat sailplane with Joseph Perrucci of Endicott, New York. On Saturday, 29 Aug 1953, the glider crashed just after releasing the tow rope at about 200-300 feet and pancaking on the ground, killing it's pilot (Charles J. Smith, 40 or 42, an experienced glider pilot and instructor, and a mechanic for a glider manufacturer, Schweizer Aircraft Corp.) and seriously injuring his son (Charles E. Smith, 16). Jack Wilkins had flown the craft earlier in the day for over an hour, reaching about 7100 feet. (From the 30 Aug 1953 Press and Sun-Bulletin of Binghamton, New York, page 3, column 4. Also from the 1 Sep 1953 Rutland Daily Herald of Rutland, Vermont, page 11, col. 1. Charles J. Smith was formerly of Rutland.)

Jack may have applied for and passed the civil service examination for a police patrolman posting in Southport [, New York], a census-designated place, just south of Elmira. (From the 27 Oct 1953 Star-Gazette, Elmira, New York, page 14, col. 4.)
