Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

SPELLING

Given Name: This database uses Barak. The 1900 U.S. Census uses the spelling Barrak. Actually, the last 'k' looks like 'h' but this is common due to sloppy handwriting, so a benefit-of-the-doubt is given here. [census-us-1900-ps-ca-losangeles-117-8]

FOLLOWUP

This family line has not been researched yet, but there are many facts given in the 1900 U.S. Census in addition to Barrak and his mother Debora. Barrak married (about 1883) Lybby M. (b. May 1863). Lybby's surname was probably Mercer, as suggested by the entry for the widower John R. Mercer (b. Apr 1812 in Ohio) shown as Barak's father-in-law in the census. Barrak and Lybby had three children, son George M. Pierson (b. March 1887 in Kansas), daughter Theresa (b. Jun 1885 in Kansas), and daughter Edna (b. Dec 1892 in California). Curiously, the entry for Theresa follows that for George, despite the standard practice of placing children in strcitly chronological birth order. [census-us-1900-ps-ca-losangeles-117-8]

There exist Find A Grave entries for Barak S. (177395610) and Elizabeth "Libbie" (Mercer) Pierson (177395612) in Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum in Altadena, California, and located in Alpine Meadows, plot 143, grave 8. They share a couple's gravestone. Also in this plot are her father John (179171151) (grave 3) and his mother Deborah (177395611) (grave 4), and at least two other Mercer siblings.
