CONFLICTS

Birth Date: This database uses between 2 Jun 1823 and 1 Jun 1824. Using David's age (45) and the official census date of 1 June 1870 gives a birth date range from 2 June 1824 to 1 June 1825. [census-us-1870-ps-ks-miami-paolaeastward-16]

FOLLOWUP

David may have been born in Dubois County, Indiana, June 24, 1824 and raised on a farm. (See History of the State of Kansas by William G. Cutler, published 1883.)

He may have married to Elizabeth McCausland in Dubois County, Indiana in 1846 and they may have had four children, of whom two were living in 1883: a son, Cryus, and a daughter, Mary. In 1883, Cyrus was a resident of Rawlins County, Kansas, and Mary was the wife of A. M. Ganthrop, of Coffey County. (See History of the State of Kansas by William G. Cutler, published 1883.)

In May 1857, he may have moved to Kansas, making a claim on the Indian Reservation, known as the lands of the Peorias, Wea and Plankeshaws. These homestead sites came onto market in the spring of that year at a Government sale. His purchase included the 160 acres of the northwest quarter of Section 16, Township 16, Range 22, Miami County. He continued to reside on the land from that time of making his claim through (at least) 1883, except for a temporary residence in Paola, where he served as Sheriff from 1869 to 1873 (see notes below). (See History of the State of Kansas by William G. Cutler, published 1883.)

He may have enlisted in August 1862, as a private of Company C, Twelfth Kansas Infantry. In 1863 he was promoted to Captain and assigned to Company G, Fifth Indiana, stationed at Fort Gibson, and served until April, 1864. (See History of the State of Kansas by William G. Cutler, published 1883.)

He was elected to the State Senate in 1867 to fill a vacancy. (See History of the State of Kansas by William G. Cutler, published 1883.)

In 1869 he was elected Sheriff of Miami County. Was re-elected in 1871, serving four years in all. (See History of the State of Kansas by William G. Cutler, published 1883.)

Elizabeth Anderson died in January 1877. David married again in December 1877, to Mary A. Dorsett, daughter of William H. Dorsett. She was born in Missouri, and her family were residents of Texas during the [Civil] war. In attempting to reach the North they lost all they had and narrowly escaped with their lives. (See History of the State of Kansas by William G. Cutler, published 1883.)
