FOLLOWUP

Merle's father may have been Lewis Carnes, an early settler in the Wichita, Kansas area. His siblings may have been Hazel (Carnes) Willm (died 8 Jan 1939, age 42, in Wichita), two other married but unnamed sisters, and brothers Ray and Marion. (from "Mrs. Hazel Willm Claimed by Death" in The Wichita Eagle, Wichita, Kansas, 9 Jan 1939, page 2 col. 1)

The Wichita Eagle suggests a date of 14 May 1907 in reporting a party for his 13th birthday on the [last] Friday in the 17 May 1920 edition, page 2, col. 1. This may however, have just been the day the party was held.

While serving in the U.S. Navy, Merle was called back to Wichita owing to "the serious illness of his mother, Mrs. L. E. Carnes..." (from the 9 Aug 1927 edition of the The Wichita Eagle of Wichita, Kansas, page 6, col. 3)

Merle Carnes and Lucile Winegar may have married 1 Sep 1928 in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. [research-a-spear-family-history]

Merle and Lucille had two children, {private} [research-a-spear-family-history]

A wedding description for {private} can be found in The Citizen-Patriot, Atwood, Kansas, 3 Dec 1953, p.3, c.1.

His children {private} (living in Denver), and {private} (married to _____ Holsey and living in Whittier, California) are also mentioned in his obituary. He was also survived by a sister Elsie, who was married to _____ Lesche and living in Ponca City, Oklahoma. [obituary-merle-carnes-1975]

His son Del was identified as a former Wichita [, Kansas] newsman and current (in 1965) radio-TV columnist for the Denver Post. Del was the author of a Death Valley Days television script (reported 27 Feb 1965) and another for the Combat television series (reported 5 Feb 1966, which also noted he had written multiple Death Valley Days scripts). In both articles, his parents were identified as Lucille Mayo and Merle Carnes, both of Wichita. (from The Wichita Beacon in Wichita, Kansas; 27 Feb 1965, C1 [21], col. 1 and 5 Feb 1966, 17D [43], col. 1.)

A (small) contest win was reported for Merle in The Wichita Beacon, 19 Sep 1967, page 3B [13], col. 1.
