Stories

Lavilla's Memories (Depression Stories, Lavilla Willett)

[This story was written by Lavilla Maude (Doane ) Willett. It was one of several responses to a request for stories (for a class project) about living during the Great Depression.]

When I was growing up in the 1930s, I didn't feel any different than my classmates as most everyone was in the same economic situation.

I remember going to town on Saturday night. We lived on a farm 4¼ miles north of Kadoka. We only went to town once a week. The only money we had was egg money. The eggs were gathered every day, candled, carefully packed in cardboard egg holders, and put in a large egg crate. On Saturday we would take the eggs to the grocery store and get money enough to by our groceries for the next week. The grocer would always put a free bag of hard candy in with the purchases...much to our pleasure. The country women would stand around the store visiting and we kids would gather outside and play hide-and-seek between the buildings. The men would gather at the pool hall and play cards. Women and children did not go in the pool hall. When Daddy won, he was paid off with candy. It was a big event when we got home and he shared his treasures. Going to town was a big deal! The rest of the week we stayed home and worked.

When I was old enough to go to school I walked across the field to a one-room country school house. There were six students on various grade levels. The teacher boarded at our house and shared a bed with me.
