Death Date: This database uses 6 Mar 1862. The History of Noble County indicates that Conrad died in 1861. [book-history-of-noble-county-ohio-1887]
FOLLOWUP
Conrad is identified as Dutch in the newspaper article "Four Srore and Ten," but a native of Loudoun County, Virginia in the book History of Noble County. The periodical does indicate that some of the children were also born in London (which is presumably a typo for Loudoun) County. Conrad Shafer and Mary Rasor may have married in 6 Oct 1799. [research-ancestor-chart-of-george-spear]
If Conrad and Mary married in 1799, he was an old man of 28 or so. Was he married before Mary, or did he wait that long? Their apparent first child, Elizabeth was born almost a decade after that; again a long time. At that time, Conrad was around 37 or 38. He was over 50 when son James was born. There are four other identified children who slot in well between Nelson and James. Were all four born in this period, or were some born before Elizabeth?
Conrad and Mary may have married in Leesburg, VA. There also exists a marriage record for Conrad Shafer and Mary Rasor in Guernsey County, Ohio, on 11 Feb 1831. Quite a coincidence for a second couple with the same names to be married 32 years after the first.
Conrad may have enlisted in Leesburg, VA, serving as a private in the Virginia Militia, 57 Regiment during the War of 1812.
All children but James William may have been born in Leesburg, Louden County, VA; he might have been born in Mt. Ephriam.
There exists a Find A Grave entry for Conrad, but the only image on the site is not sufficiently clear to be of use. I did try some post-processing but was unable to create a satisfactory contrast for most of the text. "Conrad" and "Aged" are the only clearly distinct words.
