John served over 20 years in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of First Sargeant in the Special Forces Division, being one of the first black members of the Green Berets. He served as a paratrooper and demolition specialist. [obituary-john-davis-2008]

Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)
FOLLOWUP
The 1940 US Census suggests John III is a son of John Davis, Jr. and Vernida. I haven't found evidence in this family yet, but a 1940 U.S. Census shows him living with Antoine and Pocahontas Joseph, and identified as Joseph's nephew. John Davis Sr. is also living with them and identified as Antoine's father-in-law. [census-us-1940-ps-la-orleans-317-1b]
However his obituary states he is a son of John Davis II and Evelyn "Broad" Wellington. I've not yet found a record of Evelyn or of any marriage (if there was one) between them. [obituary-john-davis-2008]
His obituary also notes he was a lifelong resident of New Orleans, LA, but a death notice for his father notes that John III was a resident of Seattle, WA in 1986. [obituary-john-davis-2008, periodical-funeral-notice-john-davis-1986]
