In 1898, Leopold, generally known simply as Leo, was living in Dora (Otter Tail County, Minnesota) with his parents. At this time, three children, Edward, Maria, and Leopold, were still living at home. In 1905 and 1910, only Leopold was at home.

In the 1920 U.S. Census, Leopold identifies himself as a blacksmith, but by the 1930 U.S. Census he is working in a grocery.

The various census records differ by about a year in the birth date of Leopold, generally around 1891 or 1892. The 1920 U.S. Census gives an age that places his birth year as late as 1894.
