Hattie's birth name is recorded as Swenson in the 1896 Minnesota census, by virtue of her father's name. However, it was Swanson on her birth register entry, created in 1889.

Hattie and husband Edward (owned?) and operated a small grocery store called "Mark's Market" in Fargo (Cass County, North Dakota), probably in the 1930's.

After moving from North Dakota to California, Hattie worked in her son Clifford's bakery in Los Angeles, for about 25 years.
