Research Notes (source comments, unreliable information)

The birth place of Gilbert is generally given as Nine Partners, Dutchess County, NY (and sometimes refined further to Amenia, Dutchess County), but this seems to be in conflict with the documented move of his father William to Nine Partners in 1738, too late for Gilbert to have been born there in 1731. This conflict is even present in a single genealogy reference, "Palmer Families in America."

In addition, the source "History and Map of Danby" identifies Gilbert's father as Abraham Palmer, while "Palmer Families in America" identifies his father as William (the third of at least three). For the moment, "Palmer Families" was the first source I found, and its author may be more reliable, even given the conflict above, and seems to be more widely used. (One secondary source even explicity indicated that "History and Map" was wrong WRT Abraham.)

However, it would be wise to be wary of Glibert's ancestors along this line. On the plus side, both wives and all of the descendents seems to match, except for children Rachel, Reubin, and Judah, which are only in "History and Map of Danby".

There are records for Gilbert, Sarah and Mary in the Dutchess County, New York Quaker records. Ancestry.com provides a transcribed copy (pages 57, 59, 66 in that context).
