It is unknown when Thomas began to keep the Robin Hood Tavern on his father's property. He was styled an "innkeeper" in the deed from his father for the land on which the tavern was said to be. (The land itself constituted 40.75 acres.)

It appears that selling "intoxicating drink" to others also led to perhaps too much quenching of his own thirst, and a complaint was made against him at a (Quaker) Monthly Meeting on 24 Nov 1758, for too great an indulgence along that line.

Research Notes (source comments, unreliable information)

According to Gilbert Cope, Rebecca may have been the granddaughter of Thomas' aunt Elizabeth (Hood) Shute. This was not allowed by the Friends, and they may have gone away from Philadelphia to wed. However, they returned and made an acknowledgement of their transgression, and were continued in membership. However, they were not cousins.

Thomas and Rebecca may have had another son, Thomas, who died young in 1758.
