John took the oath of freeman in 1657, and is often mentioned in public records for the next 60 years, until his death in 1717.

He requested membership in the Society of Friends in 1660, but may have associated with them a little earlier. While the baptism of John (III) was by John (Jr.), that of Thomas was on account of his mother. The second wife of John (Jr.) was also seemingly not a Quaker, as daughter Mary's baptism records her a "Mary, ye daughter of Elizabeth Rogers."

As essentially every other member of this sect, he suffered persecutions because of his faith. One such was recorded in the Scituate (Plymouth Colony) Friends record:

Sufferings of John Rogers of Marshfield. 27 day of 2 mo. 1681, came the constable Joseph Waterman to my house and brought two men with him and brought a warrant with him which he said came from the magistrate John Alden. The constable could not read it nor any that were with him, it was so blotted: and the constable demanded of me 01-04-02, which he said was rates to the priest, Samuel Niles of Marshfield, the which I could not pay for conscience sake. Whereupon the constable seized upon a steer of two years old and took him away from me. John Rogers of Marshfield."

In 1659, John was chosen grand juryman of the town. By 1692, he was a selectman of Marshfield (Plymouth Colony).

Johns date of death is from church records. However, this is in conflict with his will, which was dated 9 May 1718 and proved 24 Jun 1718.
