Joseph moved with his family about 1833 near McConnellsville, Morgan County, Ohio. The town had already been founded by members of the family.

Joseph and Sarah were married on the Fouts homestead near McConnellsville, Morgan County, Ohio. They moved to Rock Island, Rock Island County, Illinois in 1854. [History of Dakota Territory]

At Rock Island, Joseph tried teaching for a while, but then turned his attention to the wholesale harness and saddlery business. He later moved to Geneseo, Henry County, Illinois and had interests in mining, mercantile and other businesses. He stayed in Henry County for about 25 years before moving to Guthrie County, Iowa. In Iowa he lived on several hundred acres he had purchased and his activities set the standard for agricultural development among his neighbors. [History of Dakota Territory]
