On 14 Aug (maybe 30 Sep?) 1862 William enlisted in Company G of the 116th Illinois Infantry at Decautur, Illinois. I don't have any records on when he was on furlough, but a brief summary of the regiment follows. Many assignments and attachment details have been left out for this short summary.

The 116th was assigned to the Army of the Tennessee from Jan 1863 to Jun 1865. It saw action in the Siege of Vicksburg [Dec 1862 to 4 Jul 1863], the Chattanooga Campaign (Missionary Ridge) [23-27 Nov 1863], the Atlanta Campaign [6 May 1864 to 2 Sep 1864].

Following the Atlanta Campaign, General Sherman left 30,000 soldiers for defensive purposes and took 70,000 (62,000?) soldiers (including those in the 116th) for the Savannah Campaign (aka the March to the Sea) [15 Nov 1864 to 22 Dec 1864] and the Campaign of the Carolinas [1 Feb 1865 to 26 Apr 1865].

William was discharged due to illness on 1 Mar (maybe 3 Mar?) 1865.
