In 1861/2 David enlisted in Company G of the 36th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. A brief summary of the regiment follows. Many assignments and attachment details have been left out for this short summary. [1905 Kansas Census, 1915 Kansas Census]

This unit saw action in the Second Battle of Bull Run [28-30 Aug 1862], Maryland Campaign (including Antietam, 16-17 Sep) [6-22 Sep 1862], Middle Tennessee or Tullahoma Campaign (23 Jun 1863 to 7 July 1863], Chickamauga Campaign [19-21 Sep 1863], Chattanooga-Ringgold Campaign [23-27 Nov 1863], Shenandoah Valley Campaign [6 Aug 1864 to 28 Nov 1864], and a variety of other battles.

David was discharged because of illness on 27 Jan 1864.

In 1870, David and Eunice and their children Thomas and Josephine were in Indiana (USA) and living in the home of Lorenzo Vandecker (?) and his daughter Lydia Ellen.
