David served in the revolutionary war and his service was accepted by the Daughters of the American Revolution. According to the DAR:

He served as a private in the militia of Chester Co. Pa. David Maris served in Capt Hugh Jones Company, 3rd Btn. of Chester Co., Pa. Militia commanded by Lt. Col. Caleb Doves from 1780-1783. Pa.

In 1814 he moved with his entire family (except son Curtis) to Belmont County (OH).
