Research Notes (source comments, unreliable information)

Theodore may have arrived in the port of Philadelphia in 1874.

In 1880, a Theodore Brech was living with John (62) and Elizabeth (58) Brech, and their son Peter (13) in Armstrong County, Dakota Territory. However, it doesn't appear that John and Elizabeth were either his parents, or those of Chas (Charles) Brech who was also living in the house. From the ages (Theodore was 21 and Charles was 28) a working assumption is that the two younger Brechs were nephews of John. This would also indicate that Theodore immigrated at about 15.

Theodore may have been naturalized in 1886 in Hutchinson County, South Dakota. From the South Dakota State Archives (from index, no documents yet):

* First Papers: Theodore Brech, Residence: Armstrong County, Date of Intent: 22 Mar 1880, Birth Country: Prussia, Page 27, Location: 343.

* Second Papers: Theodor[e] Brech, Residence: Hutchinson County, Final Date: 1 Jun 1886, Country Renounce: Germany, Page 68, Location 346.

NOTE: Armstrong County was formed in 1873 from the Dakota Territory, and was absorbed into Hutchinson County in 1879, though it was still listed in the 1980 census. In 1895, a different Armstrong County was formed from part of the dissolution of Pratt County; other parts went to Lyman, Stanley, and Mellette Counties. This second Armstrong County was ultimately absorbed in 1952 into Dewey, Haakon, and Ziebach Counties.
