Comment: Source includes approximate age at death (76) and date of death (15 Jan 1705/06). Using these gives an approximate birth year of 1629, old-style. However, the age is only approximate and no error range is provided. This database presumes an error range +/- 5 years (1624 to 1634), so any year in this range should not be considered a conflict.

Comment: Source notes that prior to leaving England [on 25 Jul 1683], George purchased 1000 acres in Pennsylvania from Robert Toomer. However, the land is described as "unlocated" -- whatever that means. It sounds like a promissory, but it is also described as a purchase, suggesting money changed hands.

General Notes and Anecdotes

In 1670 George was fined £20 for holding a meeting of the Society of Friends (Quakers) in his home in Grafton-Flyferd, England. He was convicted by an assize [essentially a twice-yearly circuit court] and went to prison on 23 July for eight months, without any charges. Others at that meeting were also fined and/or imprisoned. [In the early 21st century, £20 corresponds to roughly £4000 to £6000.] [book-sufferings-of-the-quakers-v2-1753]

After George and Alice arrived in the American colonies, along with their six children, they settled in Springfield Township. George named the home he built there, "Home House." [book-maris-family-in-the-us-1885]

George was one of the justices holding the courts for Chester county, 1684-89, 1691-93; a member of the Chester County Assembly, 1684-1688, 1690, 1692-93; and a member of the Chester County Provincial Council, 1695. [book-maris-family-in-the-us-1885]

Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Surname: This database uses Maris. Passengers and Ships Prior to 1684 uses this spelling, but also notes the Morris spelling. [book-passengers-and-ships-prior-to-1684-1970]

Immigration: This database uses 1 Oct 1683. The Memorial and Biographical Record of Iowa uses the date August 25, 1683 as the date of landing. However, this was actually the date of embarcation from England. [book-memorial-record-of-iowa-v1-1896]

FOLLOWUP

George may have been born on 2 Dec 1632 in Worcestershire, England.

George Maris' parents were George and Alice (Collier) Maris. See The Genealogist 13.2 (Fall 1999) in the article "George Maris of Chester County, Pennsylvania."

On 30 July 1684, George was granted a patent for 400 acres in Chester County, Province of Pennsylvania. See Pensylvania patent index, A and AA series, 1684-1781.

Over the years the Home House was subdivided among children, until the remaining core parcel (30 acres and a rood) was sold in 1912 to Josiah Smith. [A rood is 1/4 acre.]

The 1922 Home House appears to still exist as an historic building of some type, and is listed by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. However, I'm not sure what its actual status is.

George was one of the signers of a declaration against George Keith (1638-1716), founder of the "Christian Quakers" (also called Keithian Quakers, or just Kethians), the first schism in the Society of Friends. Though a prosecution for sedition was generally not successful, it did succeed in taking the momentum out of the Kethian movement. Ultimately, Keith joined the Episcopal Church in London. (from George Smith's History of Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and repeated in note 1 of the appendix of The Maris Family in the United States)
