Comment: This relationship evidence is weak, and is based on Sarah being listed with the last name Hatfield, the fact they were living in the same dwelling, and were identified as being in the same family. However, John was 20 years older than Sarah. The unexpected blank spaces separating John and Sarah's entries (married couples are generally shown on successive lines) may have had some meaning to the enumerator; a meaning that is now lost. Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Given Name: This database uses Sarah A. The obituary of son Thomas uses Hinton (as in Hinton Spear). While Hinton is used as a first name, it appears to be more common for males than females. Given the other evidence suggesting Thomas' mother is Sarah Hinton, the coincidence of using her surname as a given name suggests she may have used it as a nickname, or the obituary writer (or the paper's copy editor) was having problems, and meant to use it as an augmented married name, that is, Sarah (Hinton) Spear. However, it is still a little troubling; using Sara or some other variant would be less so. [obituary-thomas-spear-1923]

Birth Date: This database uses 19 Jul 1812. Using her age (40) on the official 1850 census date of 1 June 1850 gives a birth date range from 2 June 1809 to 1 June 1810. [census-us-1850-ps-oh-guernsey-mt-ephraim-364b]

Birth Location: This database uses Ohio. The 1850 Census shows it as (Pa [Pennsylvania]). [census-us-1850-ps-oh-guernsey-mt-ephraim-364b]

FOLLOWUP

Brothers Andrew and Joseph Spear married (probable) sisters, Elizabeth Hinton and Sarah Hinton respectively.

Sarah's middle name may have been Ann, and her parents may have been Thomas Hinton (b. ?; d. 25 Mar 1828 in Ohio) and Sarah Bryant (b. 25 Nov 1768; d. 26 May 1859 in Ohio). [research-ancestor-chart-of-george-spear]

Sarah may have been born 19 Jul 1812, and in Pennsylvania rather than Ohio. [This age conflict with the census record goes away if the page's enumeration date of 27 Jul 1860 was incorrectly used instead of the official census date.] [research-ancestor-chart-of-george-spear]

Her father, Thomas Hinton, may have been born between 1770 and 1775 in Maryland and died in Kirkwood Township, Belmont County, OH. He may have had a brother William, born 1764 in MD, died 15 Aug 1820 in Belmont County, OH.

Her mother Sarah Bryant may have been born 28 Nov 1768 in Norwich, New London County, CT, and died 26 Apr 1859, buried in Glady Cemetery in Whigville, Noble County, Ohio. She may have been the daughter of John Bryant (b. ca. 1734 in New London County, CT) and Sarah Durke/Durkee (b. 3 Oct 1740), married 17 Apr 1765. Sarah Durke/Durkee may have been the daughter of Benjamin Durkee (d. 11 May 1744) and Sarah Abell, married 1 Aug 1738.

Thomas and Sarah may have been married in 1803 or 1804 (in NY or OH?), and may have had five children, all born in Belmont County, OH. These were Thomas J., Jr. (b. 2 Oct 1805), Eliza (b. 7 May 1807), Elizabeth (b. 5 Apr 1808), William Bryant (b. 8 Mar 1810), and Sarah.

As a child, Sarah's family may have been in Kirkwood Township, Belmont County, Ohio. There exists an 1820 U.S. Census record for that location that records a Thomas Hinton household with two males between 10 and 16 and one older than 45, along with one female under 10, two between 10 and 16, and one over the age of 45. This seems to fit with the known information on Thomas and Sarah. This family was a neighbor of William Hinton's family. (Thomas' last name may be misread as Henton in the document.) The same Kirkwood Township census sheet also lists a William Spears (could be Spear?) household, with one male child under 10, and a male adult between 26 and 45, and one female between 16 and 26, and one unnaturalized foreigner. This could be the family of her husband's brother and his wife, William Spear and Catherine Jarvis.

A registry entry for Joseph Spear and Sarah Hinton show that they were issued a marriage license on 1 Jun 1830 in Belmont County, Ohio, but the entry does not record the marriage return. The entry shows empty space where the return should be and it doesn't appear the ink simply faded, so why is the entry missing? Some records, such as son Daniel's death certificate, imply a marriage by naming Joseph and Sarah as parents. Other (text-only) indices record the fact of marriage. [death-daniel-spear-1915, marriage-spear-hinton-1830]

Sarah's children are not listed in the 1850 US Census although all of them were under 20 in 1850, and 1 (and probably 3) was 10 or younger. Howerver, there are seven lines in the census record following Sarah's entry that are blank, a very unusual situation when it isn't at the end of the entries for a particular location.

There are also other unusual blank spaces between John Hatfield's and Sarah's entries, which are split between two pages of the census. So, where were the children? Were they living with other family members? Noting a couple of conflicts (see above) is this the "wrong" household?

Sarah may have died 25 Mar 1867 in Owen County, Indiana., She may have been buried in Fender Cemetery, Vandalia, Owen County, Indiana. [research-ancestor-chart-of-george-spear]

An entry exists on Find A Grave for Sarah McMulin's gravestone in Fender, but the image of the broken gravestone is mostly unreadable, so only the location of this stone is known. The actual name on the stone, and if the last name McMullin or Hatfield is actually used, are as yet unknown and may require a trip to Indiana. (memorial id 43368766)
