Comment: Source includes year of immigration to the United States (1887) and years in the U.S. (13). These are consistent and, with the date of the census (1 Jun 1900) suggest a date range of 1 Jan 1887 to 31 May 1887 for his arrival in the United States.

census-us-1920-ps-mn-ottertail-123-7b: 1920 U.S. Census, population schedule, Minnesota, Otter Tail County, Vergas Village, enumeration district 123, sheet 7B (form/penned) or page 86B (stamp sequence, not visible on page); 1920 United States Federal Census, database with images, Ancestry (http://www.ancestry.com: accessed before 17 August 2018) > "Minnesota > Otter Tail > Candor > District 0123" image 11; citing “Fourteenth Census of the United States, 1920, NARA microfilm publication T625, roll 847 (of 2076), National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, D.C.” [The sheet and stamped numbers are in conflict and don’t agree with the dwelling ordering. For this citation, the sheet number is used directly, and the stamped page number is based on the database image order.]

Additional detail for reference: Line 86, dwelling 40

Comment: Source includes year of naturalization (<indistinct>). The value looks like 190_ (where '_' is unreadable) but even the '9' is subject to interpretation.

citizenship-certificate-edward-marks-1950: Certificate of Citizenship for Edward Marks; United States Department of Justice, District of Columbia, certificate number A-200131, application numbers 1600-16614 and 1600-78799, certificate issued 30 Jan 1950 [This is a certificate proving citizenship, not naturalization.]

Comment: Source includes date (July 25, 1900) of original citizenship approval. This is for one of Michael's sons, and when used in conjunction with Edward's military draft card for WWI, implies Michael's father was naturalized on 25 Jul 1900.

military-draftreg-edward-marks-1918: Draft registration card for Edward Marks (1918); U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918, database with images, Ancestry (https://ancestry.com: accessed before 2018) > “Minnesota > Otter Tail County > 1 > Draft Card M” image 63; citing “World War I Selective Service System Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, M1509, 4,582 rolls, imaged from Family History Library microfilm”

Comment: Source indicates Edward was a "Citizen by Fathers Naturalization Before Registrant's Majority." In most states prior to the 1970s the age of majority was 21. This indicates he acquired his citizenship before 12 Nov 1903. This source is used in combination with Edwards Certificate of Citizenship to give a date for his father Michael's naturalization date.

Birth Date: This database uses 3 Jan 1856. Using his age (37) on the official 1892 New York census date of of 16 Feb 1892 gives a birth date range from 17 Feb 1854 to 16 Feb 1855. [census-us-newyork-1892-kings-17-1-2]

Birth Date: This database uses 3 Jan 1856. Using his age (47) on his last birthday before the official 1900 census date of 1 June 1900 gives a birth date range from 2 June 1852 to 1 June 1853. This is consistent with the census' stated birth month and year. Note that the value of 47 appears to be a correction, replacing a value of 48. The presence of numerous such corrections on the page, including everyone in this dwelling, suggest an enumerator error. [census-us-1900-ps-mn-ottertail-156-4a]

Birth Location: This database uses Russia. The 1940 U.S. Census, 1892 New York Census, and an interview, all use Poland. However, Poland did not exist between 1779 (when it was finally, and fully, partioned between other powers) and 1918 (when the Second Polish Republic was founded), except for a semi-autonomous region of Russia that existed in 1856. FOLLOWUP

Check on changing borders with respect to birth location.

The 1892 New York State census includes Charlie (17) and Ludwig (26) in addition to the Michael and Lottie, and their presumed children. Only Mimmie is missing, and may have married. Charlie is listed as one of the children, coming between John and Edward. Ludwg is listed after 2-year-old Leopold, and may have been Michael's brother. Could children Ferdinand and Arthur have been the first or middle given names for Charlie and Ludwig? [census-us-newyork-1892-kings-17-1-2]

The 1900 U.S. Census shows that Michael's son-in-law Rudolph Galkowski (born Jun 1875 in Russia, married 1 year) was also living with them. However, it is unclear who Rudolph's wife was, since Maria was only 14 at the time. [census-us-1900-ps-mn-ottertail-156-4a]

There is a passenger record for a Michael Marks of the right age (given as 34), having left Hamburg on 26 Feb 1887 to New York (via Glasgow). His residence was given as Lossati, Russland, and his occupation was simply "worker." The ship name was the "Prague". His only listed "household member" on the trip was Ferdinand Marks (brother?) born about two years earlier.

The 1905 MN state census has a record for Michael Marks and Edward Marks in Winsted Township, McLeod County (sheet 27, image 288 of the Ancestry database "Minnesota, Terrirotiral and State Censuses, 1849-1905"). However, their ages are not quite the same, and the other Marks listed with them do not match Michael's family.

In 1910, Michael had an independent source of income, and was not working at a profession.

The Minnesota, U.S., Naturalization Records Index, 1854-1957 (text-only) database on Ancestry.com contains an index to Michael Marx' final papers. Although the last name is incorrect, this may be an error in the indexing. The other included information is: County (Otter Tail), Reel (6), Code (19), Volume (JS), Page (80), Years (25-July--1900), and Numbers (1-129).
