Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Birth Date: This database uses December 1886. The 1900 U.S. Census gives an explicit birth date (Dec 1886) and an age (23 [corrected from 24]) which, when applied to the census date of 1 Jun 1900 gives a birth date range of 2 June 1876 to 1 June 1877. This means the census is internally inconsistent, and conflicts with other records. Changing her age to 13 would remove the inconsistency. [census-us-1900-ps-mn-ottertail-156-4a]

Birth Date: This database uses December 1886. Using her age (13) on the official 1892 New York census date of 16 Feb 1892 gives a birth date range from 17 Feb 1878 to 16 Feb 1879. However, her name is also listed out-of-order. Most census list children by age (oldest to youngest) but Maria appears between 11-year old Edward and 2-year old Leopold. [census-us-newyork-1892-kings-17-1-2]

Birth Location: This database uses Poland. The 1900 census gives her birthplace as Russia. [census-us-1900-ps-mn-ottertail-156-4a]

Immigration Date: The 1892 New York census indicates that Maria was living in Brooklyn and was identified as an alien (non-citizen) in 1892. However, the 1900 census indicates that Maria immigrated in 1898. [census-us-newyork-1892-kings-17-1-2, census-us-1900-ps-mn-ottertail-156-4a]

SPELLING

Given Name: This database uses Maria. An interview with Loretta Spear gives the name Mary. [interview-loretta-spear-2006]

FOLLOWUP

Maria's birth date is something of a puzzle. In both the 1892 New York and 1900 U.S. Census records, she is older than her brother (2 or 4 years, depending on the record) when using her age applied to the official census date. However, she is also listed after her brother, in defiance of the standard (gender-insensitive, oldest-to-youngest) ordering of the children in a household. Adding to the irregularities, the explicit year of birth given in the 1900 U.S. Census does follow this ordering, but it is also a decade before the range indicated by the age,
