The Wichita Eagle suggests a date of 14 May 1907 in reporting a party for his 13th birthday on the [last] Friday in the 17 May 1920 edition, page 2, col. 1. This may however, have just been the day the party was held.

Merle's father may have been Lewis Carnes, an early settler in the Wichita, Kansas area. His siblings may have been Hazel (Carnes) Willm (died 8 Jan 1939, age 42, in Wichita), two other married but unnamed sisters, and brothers Ray and Marion.
