Stories

Memories of the Dirty 30's (Depression Stories, Wesley Price)

[This story was written by Wesley Price. It was one of several responses to a request for stories (for a class project) about living during the Great Depression.]

I don't know what year it was, 1934 or 1936, both were bad. When the Russian thistles grew to a foot tall, they weren't so "stickery," so we mowed some to stretch our feed supply and raked them into windrows. When they dried, we pitched them into a hay rack and took them to the feed yard to stack. They were rather fluffy and had to be tromped down in the hay rack to pack. The stickers would penetrate the socks and pant legs of our pants. We didn't do an awful lot of haying, but it helped for the cows feed supply. They had four stomachs and chewed their cud. The horses were different. The needles went thru the stomach into the intestines and poked holes in them. We lost five horses before the vets figured out the trouble.

The thistles had a laxative effect on the cows. As a result, when we brought them in from the pasture, barefoot, we walked on the grass not in the cow path. The cow's tails were soaked with manure. When the flies were bad, that mop rag fly swatter was a real problem. As a result, to milk them, I'd take a twine string and tie the tail to the cow's leg.

Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

FOLLOWUP

Wesley was probably born the son of George and Laura Price, living in Garfield, (Spink County, SD). His siblings (in 1920) would then be Maurice (age 5y4m), Melvin (age 3). (From the 1920 U.S. Census.)

Per his obituary, he was buried at Garfield Cemetery in Tulare, South Dakota. However, the obituary was created before this happened and I haven't been to Tulare recently or obtained other eviddence. [obituary-wesley-price-2011]
