Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Immigration: This database uses 1874. The 1920 U.S. Census gives a date of 1872. [census-us-1920-ps-sd-douglas-80-6b]

SPELLING

Given Name: This database uses Theodore. His grave marker uses the spelling Theodor. [marker-theodor-christina-brech-1930-1906]

FOLLOWUP

Theodore may have arrived in the port of Philadelphia in 1874.

Both of his parents were born in Prussia. [census-us-1880-ps-dakotaterritory-hutchinson-93-15]

His parents may have been John Brech (1818-1898) and Elisabeth Lue (Guy) Brech (1822-1890).

Theodore may have had siblings named Karl Brech (1848-1926) and John Jacob Brech (1866-1938).

In 1880, Theodore (21) was living with John (62) and Elizabeth (58) Brech and their son Peter (13). in Hutchinson (Armstrong) County, Dakota Territory. However, it doesn't appear that John and Elizabeth were either Theodore's parents, or those of Chas (Charles) Brech (28) who was also living in the house. From the ages, and the fact that all of them, as well as all of their parents were claimed to have been born in Prussia, a working hypothesis is that the Theodore and Charles were nephews of John. This would also indicate that Theodore immigrated at about 15. [census-us-1880-ps-dakotaterritory-hutchinson-93-15]

Theodore may have been naturalized in 1886 in Hutchinson County, South Dakota. From the South Dakota State Archives (from index, no documents yet): First Papers (Theodore Brech, Armstrong County, Date of Intent: 22 Mar 1880, Birth Country: Prussia, Page: 27, Location: 343) and Second Papers: (Theodor[e] Brech, Hutchinson County, Final Date: 1 Jun 1886, Country Renounce: Germany, Page: 68, Location: 346).

He may have married a second wife, Mary Elizabeth (Walter or Pfeifer) (1873-1964) in 1922.

Theodore may have died in Haakon County, South Dakota.
