General Notes and Anecdotes
In 1830, bothers William, Robert, James, Samuel, David, Andrew, and Joseph Spear were all living in separate households in Kirkwood Township, Ohio. The record also suggests that Robert and William were next-door neighbors, as were James, David, and Andrew. [census-us-1830-ps-oh-belmont-kirkwood-197, census-us-1830-ps-oh-belmont-kirkwood-200]
Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)
Birth Date: This record uses 12 Jan 1792. Using his age (56) on the official 1850 census date of 1 June 1850 gives a birth date range from 2 June 1793 to 1 June 1794. [census-us-1850-ps-oh-guernsey-jefferson-428a]
Surname: This database uses Spear. His grave marker uses Spears. This name change could have been a personal choice, or a mistake by the stone mason. [marker-robert-spears-1861]
Note that some genealogies and even search engines show a "marriage" date of 13 Dec 1821 for Robert and Margaret. However, looking at the actual record registry shows there is no affirmation of a marriage on that date, but there is notice of an affidavit from Robert. The 13 Dec date is not a marriage therefore, but probably the date of their marriage license being granted. A little more searching of the Ohio Marriage records shows that they were actually married on 20 Dec. The need for the affidavit on 13 Dec is unclear. These are usually attesting to the freedom to marry (for example, that they are old enough, or they are unencumbered by a previous marriage) but the need in this case is unknown. Was it just a formality? Since 29 is somewhat old for a first marriage, especially in the early 1800s, was Robert married before Margaret?
Robert may have died in Owen County, Indiana. [research-a-spear-family-history]
