FOLLOWUP

A collection of letters exists at the Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College. (Smith Family correspondence, 1852-1864, SC/133, Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College, http://archives.tricolib.brynmawr.edu/repositories/7/resources/6818). The collection includes letters about "farm life and family concerns," from his parents, and an unsent letter intended for phrenologist Orson Squire Fowler, seeking to taking courses from Orson. The abstract page also notes that Ebenezer died in 1885."

A U.S. Pensioners record exists for Ebenezer Smith and his widow Catharine Smith. The pension office is located in Albany, New York, and lists entries for the years 1936-1848. The record shows that Ebenezer had the rank of private, and Catherine was owed a half-yearly stipend of $15. If it applies, it implies that Ebenezer joined the military when he was 17 or so, and stayed for 12 years. No date of death is is shown on the record.

He may have served (again?) in the Civil War. The record indicates he served for the state of New York, enlisting 25 April 1861 at the age of 32, and mustering out with the rank of Full Sargeant on 14 May 1863.
