CONFLICTS
Birth Date: This database uses 19 September 1812. Using his age (38) on the official 1850 census date of 1 Jun 1850 gives a birth date range from 2 Jun 1811 to 1 Jun 1812. [census-us-1850-ps-ny-erie-collins-290b]
Death Date: This database uses 19 July 1900. The Smith Family Register provides the date as (___ of 8th mo 1900) but this may reflect some uncertainty on the part of the writer who seems to have not known the specific day. [family-gilbert-smith-family-tree]
FOLLOWUP
Note there is a distinct Gilbert P. Smith, of Wayne County, Iowa, and who died 16 Dec 1900. His surviving wife was Elizabeth and there is no name match on his nine children, except he also had a daughter Mary, who married _____ King.
Gilbert's middle name was probably Palmer, for his mother's family. [research-ancestor-chart-of-george-spear]
In 1840 Gilbert's household included several others. They were probably his wife Lydia and his son Nathan, plus one other male. However, the source only provides counts, not individual details. [census-us-1840-ps-ny-erie-collins-144]
In 1860, the household also included a 5-year old child named Clark Tayler/Taylor. His relationship is unknown. [census-us-1860-ps-ia-cedar-iowa-157]
Were James and May Smith, Gilbert's uncle and aunt?
Gilbert moved to Iowa in 1853, and was a farmer with a stock and dairying business, and one of the proprietors of Cold Spring Cheese Factory. His farm was 254 acres (valued at $15,500).
Gilbert Palmer Smith may have had an honorary hand in building the steps the Wichita Methodist Church in 1898 when he was around 86. The family lived less than a mile from the new church. (See granddaughter Eva's notes.) From {private} Smith.
By 1860, his household also seem to include parents Barak (now 73) and Mary (now 71). Although these were recorded as "James" and "May" by the census taker, they are almost certainly Gilbert's parents, who also fit the Census information and makes more sense.
