FOLLOWUP
There exists a Quaker marriage record for John Bartram and Mary Maris. Check Ancestry.com database U.S., Quaker Meeting Records, 1681-1935, in Pennsylvania 〉 Chester 〉 Chester Monthly Meeting 〉 Certificates of Marriage Record, image 84. This is a good quality color image; there is also a black-and-white image that is difficult to see in another part of the database.
There exists a Quaker death record for Mary Bartram. Check Ancestry.com database U.S., Quaker Meeting Records, 1681-1935, in Pennsylvania 〉 Delaware 〉 Darby Monthly Meeting 〉 Births and Burials, 1682-1835, image 34, recto, 5th entry from bottom. This is a black-and-white image that is a little difficult to see, but is readable.
Interestingly, there is also a record for Mary, wife of John Bartram on 24 Feb 1727 in Norfolk, England, Church of England Baptism, Marriages, and Burials, 1535-1812 〉 Norfolk 〉 Mattishall 〉 1703-1768, image 36, recording her burial. Are the names and dates coincidence, or was her body transported to England (her birthplace?) for burial? The question arrises because there is also apparently a grave in Darby Friends Cemetery for her, in Darby, Pennsylvania, as noted on Find A Grave; there is no image of a gravestone. The location in Darby is far more reasonable, but its an interesting conincidence.
The Mary who was buried in Mattishall, was likely the Mary who was baptised as the daughter of Richard Maris in February 1715. Although her father's name was also Richard, she would have been too young to have married in 1723, except as the "engagement" preliminary to an arranged marriage some years later, but I didn't think either the Church of England or the Quakers did that. From the Ancestry database Somerset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1531-1812 〉 Ilchester 〉 1690-1775.
