Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)
CONFLICTS
Birth Date: This database uses 14 Oct 1884. His obituary gives an explicit birth date (Oct. 14, 1883) and an age (71). When applied to his death date of 18 Aug 1955, the age gives a birth date range of 19 Aug 1883 to 18 Aug 1884, so the record is internally consistent. However, the year is off by 1. [obituary-george-anderson-1955]
Birth Location: This database uses Dakota Territory. His birth index entry and the 1900 U.S. Census and give his birth location as South Dakota, but the state did not exist until 2 Nov 1889. This is certainly due to the use of the current name at the time the record was created, rather than the name on the given date. FOLLOWUP
A 1918 draft registration card for George Arthur Anderson, married to Mary Ann Anderson appears to be a different person. It notes he was born 24 Jan 1883 and living in Minneapolis, MN.
Was George (b. ~2Apr1883-1Apr1884) in the U.S. Navy, and stationed in Guam in 1930? At the time he was unmarried. (1930 US Census, enumeration district: military / Guam, sheet 4B)
The 1940 US Census (Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, SD, EF 50-28A, sheet 4B) shows a household with George (b. ~2Apr1884-1Apr1885) and Laura Anderson (b. ~2Apr1908-1Apr1909).
His 1942 draft registration (b. 14 Oct 1884) lists next-door neighbor Leonard Hawkins as the "person who will always know your address" rather than a wife. Was he separated or divorced from Laura at the time? It also lists his place of birth as Mitchell rather than Ethan. (Both are in Davison County, SD.)
A 1950 US Census for George Anderson, married to Gertrude, appears to be a different person. The 1942 draft registration for this George with wife Gertrude shows a birth date of 30 Mar 1883 in Baltic, Minnehaha County, SD, USA and living in Solano, CA.
George may have married Laura (1908-1998). Laura may be Laura Amelia Irvine Lau, the daughter of Hugh Jackson Irvine (1881-1963) and Hanna A. Webster (1893-1913). If so, did her mother later marry _____ Lau? Laura may have married Ferdinand Johannes Gimbel (1900-1979, m.1923), then George (m.1934), and finally Thomas Michael Glynn (1902-1996, m. 1958). (amateur family tree on Ancestry)
George's petition to change his surname to Anderson was filed 18 May 1945. In the petition George notes that he had adopted the surname Anderson, that he was married under that surname, that he holds real estate under that surname, and that he registered for the draft under that surname. The petition was granted sometime before 23 Mar 1946. [periodical-schoenfelder-name-change-notice-1945, periodical-schoenfelder-name-change-granted-1946]
Additional evidence for the name change being granted can be found in George Anderson's obituary. The obituary notes George is survived by six siblings, whose names match one-for-one with all of George Shoenfelder's siblings, including the surname Schoenfelder for all of his brothers, and Brech for his only sister's married surname. [obituary-george-anderson-1955]
George moved to a nursing home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, early in 1954. [obituary-george-anderson-1955]
He may have been buried in Hills of Rest Memorial Park, Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, SD, USA. (unsourced Find A Grave memorial #75078284)
