FOLLOWUP
The obituary for Enos, the obituary for his wife Louhana and their shared gravestone all disagree and give three different values for Enos' death date. The most likely to be correct is his obituary, as it would have been written within a few days of his death. This means that the gravestone (a pillar monument) is either not for him, or is incorrect. Per their obituaries, both Enos and Louhana were known to have been buried in Oberlin Cemetery, and the odds of finding a second couple with the same names, in the same small-town cemetery, with birth and death dates within a few years of each other, seem quite long. It seems more likely that the monument is wrong. Was it erected after the death of Louhana using faulty information?
The 1870 U.S. Census shows an entry for Enos and Luhanna Karnes living in Morgan, Mercer County, Missouri on page 54/179B (image 54 in the Ancestry database). However, despite the many similarities with respect to other sources, there are also many discrepencies, and I'm not convinced it's the same couple.
There also appears to exist an affidavid of death for Enos Carns, a resident of Decatur County, Kansas, who died 8 Dec 1901.
