General Notes and Anecdotes

William joined Company H, Sixty-fifth Ohio Volunteer Infantry in 1864, and was wounded in Chatanooga, 24 Nov 1864. He remained on the battlefield four nights, taken prisoner, then recaptured by Federal troops. His injury required amputation of his leg (performed in Nashville, Tennessee) and he was discharged in Jun 1865. Some time later he required a second amputation. [Further up the leg?] The second operation was performed by Dr. Holstein of Zanesville, who afterward became Grant's family physician. [book-history-of-noble-county-ohio-1887]

He made his living as a merchant. For a short time after his military discharge, he sold books. [book-history-of-noble-county-ohio-1887]
