General Notes and Anecdotes

Austin served in the 92nd Ohio Infantry during the American Civil War, serving at Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge (the source called this Mission Ridge), and on Sherman's march through Georgia. [obituary-austin-shafer-1944]

After the war, Austin was a professor of Latin at the University of Iowa. He came to California for a visit and stayed. [obituary-austin-shafer-1944]

In California, he was a member of the Stanton Post [post #55, Los Angeles, California] of the G.A.R. and held every elective office in it. He also organized the post's Last Man's Club in October 1935, all of whose members were at least 90 years old. [A Last Man's Club is the common name given to tontines created for brothers-in-arms, with some artifact (such as a fine wine) held in escrow until one man is the last survivor of the group. As part of Stanton Post, this was presumably for Civil War veterans.] [obituary-austin-shafer-1944]

He served as a City Councilman (1889, 1890) and Board of Education president (1891, 1892). He taught high school in Santa Monica in 1876, later teaching at Vernon, Spadra, and Cahuenga, all in Los Angeles County, California. [obituary-austin-shafer-1944]

He was also a lifelong real estate dealer and builder, dealing in real estate almost from the time he moved to California up until he died. [His daughter gives the year as 1872, about six years after he moved to California, according to his certificate of death.] [obituary-austin-shafer-1944]

Austin wrote his own obituary when he was about 94, with blanks for the unknown details. Though included in his actual obituary, the latter included more. [obituary-austin-shafer-1944]
