General Notes and Anecdotes

The ship on which Herman emmigrated from Bremen, Germany, the SS Karlsruhe, was owned by Norddeutscher Lloyd of Bremen, Germany. The ship should not be confused with the more famous cargo ship Karlsruhe, built in 1905 and sunk in 1945. [citizenship-petition-herman-joop-1939]

Herman served in the Spanish-American war. [interview-private-2007-a]

Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Surname: This database uses Joop. His Petition for Naturalization form gives it as both Joop and Yoop. The latter is presumed to be an error by the typist. [citizenship-herman-joop-petition-1939]

Immigration Ship: This database uses SS Karlruhe. His Petition for Naturalization identifies it as Karlruke, for which no information can be found, and which is apparently an error by the typist. [citizenship-herman-joop-petition-1939]

Naturalization (Filing) / Petition for Naturalization (Before 12 Sep 1918): This database notes that Herman submitted a Petition for Natualization before 1918. His 1939 Petition for Naturalization notes that Herman had not previously submitted any Petition for Naturalization. (Did the clerk taking information for his 1939 Petition instruct him to answer that way, because the 1939 Petition was in a different state than the pre-1918 petition?) [citizenship-herman-joop-petition-1939]

Naturalization (Filing) / Declaration of Intention (1934) Location: This database uses Moorhead, Clay County, Minnesota. In his 1939 Petition for Naturalization, Herman indicates he filed a Declaration of Intention on 21 November 1934 in Fargo, North Dakota. (Note that in his 1934 Declaration he does state that he had taken out first papers (Declaration of Intention) in Fargo, but in 1902.) [citizenship-herman-joop-petition-1939]

Naturalization (Granted) Date: This database uses 9 Feb 1940. The 1910 and 1920 U.S. Censuses indicate Herman was already a naturalized citizen, with the 1920 Census adding that he was naturalized in 1902. Is this confusion due to his filing a Declaration of Intention in 1902? (Note however, that the declaration is not a grant of citizenship.) FOLLOWUP

Herman's mother's maiden name was Kams. (From the California, Death Index, 1940-1997 text-only database on Ancestry.com.)

Did Herman have a brother Otto or sister Irma?

Herman and Clara may have had another daughter, Leona Bertha Joop, born 30 Jul 1921, died 4 Nov 1921, both in Clay County, Minnesota. Since she died as an infant, there is little record of her, but a birth record index exists. (From the Minnesota Birth Certificate index, Mnnesota Historical Society. Certificate #1921-06397, and from the Minnesota Death Certificate Index, Minnesota Historical Society. Certificate #1921-MN-002337.)

Herman may have died 21 May 1966 in Contra Costa County, California. (From the California, Death Index, 1940-1997 text-only database on Ancestry.com.) More specifically (not from the database) he may have died in Lafayette, California.
