Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Birth Date: This database uses 14 Aug 1880. The 1920 U.S. Census gives an age of (40), which, when applied to the official census date of 1 Jan 1920, gives a birth date range from 2 Jan 1879 to 1 Jan 1880. [census-us-1920-ps-mn-clay-32-2a]

FOLLOWUP

Clara probably came to the United States between 1893 and 1896 with her mother, who immigrated after her father. Presumably she was living with her parents before marrying Herman Joop, meaning she would originally settled in Bue Earth county, Minnesota, moved to Felton township in Clay county in 1896, and finally to a farm east of Thief River Falls in 1904. However, the source does not explicitly state she was with her parents, and she could have been living with other relatives, or even still in Germany. [book-history-of-clay-and-norman-counties-1918]

Herman and Clara may have had another daughter, Leona Bertha Joop, born 30 Jul 1921, died 4 Nov 1921, both in Clay County, Minnesota. Since she died as an infant, there is little record of her, but a birth record index exists. (From the Minnesota Birth Certificate index, Mnnesota Historical Society. Certificate #1921-06397, and from the Minnesota Death Certificate Index, Minnesota Historical Society. Certificate #1921-MN-002337.)
