Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)
CONFLICTS
Birth Date: This database uses 13 November 1828. Using his age from his gravestone (84y, 1mo, 7d) and the date of his death (Dec. 16, 1912) gives a birth date of 9 November 1828. This is off by only a few days, and could represent a calculation error. [marker-alvah-hocket-mary-hunt-1912-1908]
SPELLING
First Name: This database uses Alvah. The 1850 census uses Alva. [census-us-1850-ps-oh-clinton-jefferson-243b]
FOLLOWUP
Alvah's name is well established in the sources. However, two photographs in the Spear Archive are certainly Alvah, but his name is spelled (as well as I can interpret it) as either Alvalt or Alvati. Is this a child's nickname for him? At least one of the identifications was written by his daughter, Mary Anna. [Spear Library, TODO SFM_PVxxx-01 and SFM_PVxxx-01]
Alvah is currently shown in this database to have married sisters. First Lydia Hunt, then after she died, he married her sister Mary Jane Hunt. Is this true, or have I interpretted the sources incorrectly? In the 1880 census, Jane Hunt (the mother of both wives) is shown living with Alvah and Mary Jane. However, I have not yet specified whether this applies to either sister (it would clearly apply to both), pending confirmation or refutation of the idea that he married sisters. [census-us-1880-ps-in-morgan-265-5]
Mahlon Hockett and son Alvah were "next-door" neighbors after Alvah married. Did Mahlon split off part of his farm? [census-us-1850-ps-oh-clinton-jefferson-243b]
Alvah Hockett and Mary Jane Hunt probably married on 12 Mar 1874.
Alvah Hockett and Mary J. Hunt may have had another child, Grace Darling Hocket, and she may have been born 13 Nov 1880 in Morgan County, Indiana. (From an unrecorded Ancestry.com database citing Quaker records: Nebraska Monthly Meeting: Central City Meeting, Elk Valley, Friendsdale, North Loup, Plainview, Pierce County, Pleasant Hill, Spring Bank, Lincoln Executive (Hicksite).
On 1 Mar 1900, Alvah, Mary Jane, and children Hervey and Grace were received on certificate from (?). A year later, 6 Jun 1901, they were granted a certificate to (?). The 1900 rocf may have been to Nebraska. (from Nebraska Monthly Meeting records)
The reference for the 20 Feb 1860 certificate to West Union MM also mentions a child "Almedia" but I have found no reference to a child of this name. Could this be child Adaline? If so, the date of death could certainly not be 1858. Further, Almedia/Adaline is not mentioned in the 1860 U.S. Census. [book-american-quaker-genealogy-v5-1936]
