General Notes and Anecdotes
Though born in Iowa and living there at least through 1900, by 1910 Fred and his family, along with a sister-in-law, were living in Grand Junction, Colorado. This may have been due to his move from farming to working as a brakeman for a freight train company. However, by 1925 he was back to farming in Iowa. [census-us-1900-ps-ia-allamakee-15-8a, census-us-1910-ps-co-mesa-92-7a, census-us-ia-1925-allamakee-jefferson-31]

FOLLOWUP
Florence Maris (17, b. Iowa), a sister of Lilly, was staying with Fred and Lillie Stilwell's family in June 1900, and was still living with them after a move to Grand Junction, Colorado sometime before 1910. [census-us-1900-ps-ia-allamakee-15-8a, census-us-1910-ps-co-mesa-92-7a]
Fred sometimes husked black walnuts in his corn sheller (a device with toothed wheels, used to remove corn kernels from the cob, but also often used for hulling black walnuts). This left him with a temporary odor of walnut hulls, a smell appreciated by his niece, Cora. (Husking removes the fleshy hull, leaving the shell and nut suitable for storage. These hulls have an smell that some consider pleasantly pungent or spicy.) [This information is in the research notes, because it is not known if this refers to Fred Schalk or Fred Stilwell, both of whom were great-uncles to Cora.] [interview-cora-mcquisten-2007]
