General Notes and Anecdotes

The town of McConnellsville, Ohio was founded by members of Joseph's family. [book-history-of-dakota-territory-v5-1915]

At Rock Island, Joseph tried teaching for a while, but then turned his attention to the wholesale harness and saddlery business. He later moved to Geneseo, Henry County, Illinois and had interests in mining, mercantile and other businesses. He stayed in Henry County for about 25 years before moving to Guthrie County, Iowa. In Iowa he lived on several hundred acres he had purchased and his activities set the standard for agricultural development among his neighbors. [book-history-of-dakota-territory-v5-1915]

FOLLOWUP

In 1870, Augusta Nelson (age 19, seamstress, born in Sweden), Etzy[?] Fouts (age 41, carpenter, born in Ohio), and Lewis Border (age 26, carpenter, born in Ohio) were also living with Joseph and Sarah's family. Etzy Fouts was probably Sarah's brother, and Lewis may have married Belle Spear (T. J. Spear's daughter) in 1922, though why he was boarding with Joseph and Sarah, or if he knew them, is unknown. Joseph may have been buried in Gutherie County, Iowa.
