SPELLING

Surname: This database uses Spear. The 1885 Nebraska State Census gives the spelling Spears. This is a common problem for this surname; it has happened to the compiler of this database more than a few times. [census-us-ks1885-s1-rawlins-atwood-township-12]

FOLLOWUP

Eunice may have married David Harrison Spear in Spencer, Owen County, Indiana. [research-a-spear-family-history]

In 1870, David and Eunice and their children were in Indiana and living in the home of Lorenzo Vandecker(sp?) and his daughter(?) Lydia Ellen, along with another farmhand, George Pence. [census-us-1870-ps-in-huntington-jackson-1]

He may have enlisted in the 36th on 11 Sep 1861. This was about two weeks after the regiment and company was mustered into service on 26-27 August (or 30 Jul to 31 Aug) at Marietta, Ohio. The unit saw action in at least 10 battles while David may have been in service, including the Second Battle of Bull Run (30 Aug 1862), Antietam (17 Sep 1862), and Brown's Ferry (27 October 1863). David may have been discharged 5 Jan 1864 "on Surgeon's certificate of disability." (from Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1866, Volume 3; Cincinnati: The Ohio Valley Pub. & Mfg. Co., 1886; information found on pages 635, 637, 674, 678; the examined PDF copy seemed to have some pages out-of-order, including the pages between 626 and 639.)

There exists a marriage license and certificate (it looks somewhat decorative and doesn't have a lot of information) for David H. Spear and Mariah A. Powell, being married 2 Nov 1876, with the license being issued in Owen County, Indiana. Although this is suggestive to David and Anna (if her middle name is Mariah as noted for Anna Powel's entry in this database) enough questions exist that I'm not ready to use it in this database.

In Jun 1880, David and Anna were living in Thayer County, NE without any children. However, the oldest of their children at the time was 15, the youngest about 9. Where were they? [census-us-1880-ps-ne-thayer-297-6]

The 1885 Kansas State Census notes that David and Anna moved to Kansas from Indiana. However, the 1880 U.S. Census notes that they lived in Nebraska after Indiana and before Kansas. [census-us-ks1885-s1-rawlins-atwood-township-12]

The 1885 Kansas State Census includes John H. Powell (27, born in Indiana, working as a laborer in 1885), and William T. Pear (20, born in Kansas, working as a herder in 1885). Was John Powell a brother of Anna? (Also like David and Anna, according to the Census record, he moved from Indiana directly to Kansas.) And were both of them working as hired hands on David's farm? [census-us-ks1885-s1-rawlins-atwood-township-12]

Since children Thomas and Josephine were at least 20 and 18 years old in 1885, respectively, and child John died as an infant, presumably long before 1885, it isn't a great mystery why they aren't in the 1885 Kansas State Census. However, daughter Susan was probably around 13. Why isn't she listed? [census-us-ks1885-s1-rawlins-atwood-township-12]

The page in the 1885 Kansas State Census following the one containing David and Anna, starts with the same dwelling and family numbers (26) for the George Archer family. However, I think this may be a census enumerator error. Although the same dwelling number could just mean they live in the same house, putting them in the same family seems to be an error. [census-us-ks1885-s1-rawlins-atwood-township-12]

The 1895 Kansas census, Ludell, Rawlins County, Kansas, ["page" number 7 (each page consists of 3 "real" page sides; this is image 10-11 in the Ancestry database Kansas, U.S., State Census Collection, 1855-1925] shows D. Spear (85, Ohio), Anna Spear (42, Indiana), and D. H. Spear (7, Nebraska) in one household. It also shows no military record in the image I viewed. His obituary makes no mention of a son D. H. Spear ("Jr"?). Does this mean that D.H died young? Still, unexpected he would be unmentioned, even as a son who was deceased, since John, a son by Eunice, died as an infant and was mentioned.

David's obituary notes that he was afflicted with a paralysis from which he did not recover. [obituary-david-pear-1917]
